There are several legends about gnomes or fairies or suchlike performing tasks around the house and garden at night, when the owners were asleep. This thought has persisted in the use of garden gnomes.
If it really was a myth, it would be a crazy one. Who ever heard of someone running away from a lawn just because there was a ceramic little man standing there?
Folklore from around the world contains many references to protective entities that nurture nature. Statues of the jolly little garden gnome represent an earthy-type character who protects and cares for gardens, and has done so for about the last 150 years.
