Not sure but those lil guys scare the crap out of me…
At night around 3:30AM they all come to life and roam around
the yard.
First of all, they’re awesome. Second, they started in Germanic countries such as Germany, England, Switzerland, etc. Their origins have to do with Germanic myths and folklore. Do not criticize them. They’re great and I have a bunch of them in my own garden, so shut up.
my mother bought me a garden gnome, to remind me of home ( I live 100′s of miles away) he’s kinda cute, but I personally wouldn’t buy one..but because my mam gave it to me he’s got to stay there!!
I’d say it’s either to decorate the garden for fun (I love my garden and am constantly buying things for it) or to keep pests away such as deer and bunnies.
This started with the DEPRESSION BABYS..after ww2 they were all shell shocked and sat around outside…my neighbor returned from 4 years in germany pow camp and could never sleep in a bed again….he had alot of fantasy animals in his garden he would sleep in the sleeping bag in the winters…he had a goodtime with them and was doing better ubtil the winter of 1957 and the first rotary snowplow came to our town…poor Ivans sleeping bag was too close to the curb and Ivan was made into sausage size pieces.He was reported missing but it wasn’t until the thaw that his false teeth were found in the city dump…MOST OF IVAN was gone but the little garden gnome stayed right next to his dentures….GREAT AUNT NELL brought the gnome home and buried the teeth under the gnome. I know Ivans still around and eachtime i see a GARDEN GNOME think of just how stupid IVAN really was …… aaaarggghhh aaaargghhh…so i think yard trophys remind POOR PEOPLE that there is a DISNEYWORLD they can afford….to visit eachday
