Why do people think garden gnomes are a good feature?

garden gnomes
Gareth S asked:

I don’t know if it is particular to the UK, but I have seen so many gardens with that I wonder what purpose they serve. I can understand that, years ago they may have been regarded as cute or fun but I would have hoped that we had moved on since then. If a garden owner wants to have ornaments then surely there is a big enough range to choose from rather than buy a gnome. Do owners of gnomes want to tell the world that they are being an individual and don’t care what the public amy think? I really am at a loss to understand why this ugly adornment remains an item that can be so readily bought!

i remember jarvis cocker said something which is quite apt about this kind of subject.
its basically that if someone does something tacky like this but doesnt think its tacky, then it instantly stops being tacky.

Having a lot is not so good, and there are many cheap and nasty one about.

I used to sell Garden Gnomes, we ran it as a Gnome Adoption agency. Cast them, painted them, and sent flyers all around the town saying Gnomes were looking for adpotion.

    We sold loads.

The odd one in some gardens is OK. We’ve got a gnome that is 50 years old and followed us around since we found him buried in one of our previous gardens. I think that classes him as more of an ormament that filling your garden wholesale with loads of naff stuff.

I wish we still ran our gnome adoption agency, i’d be giving Madonna call today.

we don’t live in the UK — but what planet are you on — a world without gnomes — how could you be so blind — they ( the gnomes ) are so special that people go out of their way to steal them — that’s why we hide ours under shrubs — you sadly have no imagination — for which the gnome fully understands — and you most likely do not believe in Santa Claus — that’s your call ; but some people like whats in their backyard . — and we love the world — regardless of the mayhem ; and we have any doubt — we consult the gnomes ( most of them smile ! ) get my drift ??? !

I don’t get the attraction either. Then again, I don’t get what a gazing ball’s purpose is either. I’ve yet to see anyone gazing into one.

Being a Horticulturalist I have always wondered why people buy Garden Gnomes myself. I have to agree there are so many other Garden Ornaments, Statues available on the market so why would one buy them.
I think they like to have them stolen, and have pictures sent back to them like a friend of mine, his Garden Gnome was photographed enjoying a drink in Tropical Fiji then again in Europe:-)
Regardless I guess we all have different tastes and that’s why we are individuals.
